To be successful in this role, the incumbent must be a leading contributor to the success of the Canadian Operations’ Solvency 2 program. The actuary is responsible for the methodology of the company’s Internal Model with regard to the Solvency 2 program and its economic capital. The actuary is also responsible for the delivery of results and the implementation of an appropriate governance structure. This is an important, influential position at the heart of Standard Life in Canada, a company headquartered in Scotland.

  • Understand, maintain and develop the Internal Model’s project management methodology.
  • Plan, coordinate and contribute to results related to the Internal Model and the Standard Formula and be responsible for the allocation of profits and losses.
  • Issue the economic capital results using the Internal Model.
  • Determine the risk impact level of different insurance risk factors using an approved methodology.
  • Stay abreast of Solvency 2 related developments.
  • Stay abreast of new products or changes to the company’s existing products.
  • Understand (clear conclusions and trends analysis) results related to the Internal Model and the Standard Formula and be able to explain them to management.
  • Coordinate maintenance of the inventory of data and evaluation of risks’ impacts.
  • Ensure the robustness of controls in order to meet Solvency 2 criteria.
  • Build and maintain relationships with our internal and external business partners. Work closely with teams in the UK.
  • Ensure the continuous development and enhancement of processes and participate in and/or supervise the development of related computerized tools.
  • Act as a reference for less experienced employees.
  • Work with Compliance, Internal Audit and Risk Management oversight functions to ensure the adherence of different processes to relevant regulatory requirements and internal policies.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Sciences, Mathematics, or other relevant field.
  • Fellowship of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA), Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), and/or other international equivalent recognition.
  • Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience, 2 years of which should be in corporate actuarial or in actuarial model development for capital purposes.
  • Literate in technology used to carry out responsibilities, particularly Microsoft Office (Excel, Access) and investment compliance applications. Knowledge of GGY Axis is an asset.
  • Bilingual, French and English, written and spoken.
