Description:

The Senior Legal Counsel provides advice on complex legal matters involving various aspects of the business of the Company, its subsidiaries and affiliates in Canada (the "Standard Life Group"), acting autonomously, and, as determined by, may focus on the provision of legal services to particular lines of business.

  • Reviews and/or prepares complex legal documents, including contracts related to the Standard Life Group business, as directed by the Associate General Counsel.
  • Provides legal advice and training with regards to various complex legal issues related to the Standard Life Group business, as directed by the Associate General Counsel.
  • Ensures that the lines of business for which the Senior Legal Counsel is responsible operate within the limits prescribed by the law and ensures that such lines conduct their business in an ethical manner.
  • Acts as corporate secretary and/or director, under the direction of his or her manager or the Associate General Counsel  to certain companies or committees within the Standard Life Group (minute taking & governance).
  • Monitors relevant legislative and regulatory developments, relevant jurisprudence and CLHIA initiatives and communiqués and advises appropriate departments and other Department members.
  • Provides research services, as required.
  • Provides staff-training with regards to legal issues, as required.
  • Assists the Standard Life Group in the identification, implementation and maintenance of controls to mitigate financial and operational risks. Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and internal policies.
  • Facilitates communication between the Standard Life Group and applicable regulatory bodies and industry task force committees.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Common or Civil Law degree and a member of a provincial Bar, with a minimum of eight (8) years of relevant legal experience.
  • Knowledge of group pension, savings and insurance products and applicable law.
  • Ability to draft contracts (including services agreements and insurance policies pertaining to group pension and savings products and group benefits, for employees).
  • Knowledge of CAP guidelines.
  • Good negotiation skills.
  • Practical approach to the application of the law.
  • Good communication skills in French & English ( excellent written English).
