The Vice President, Commercial & Technology Partnership leads a team of Technology Partners, Practice Managers and Commercial leads to set and deliver on technology policy and partnership.  He also acts as Technology Partner of the President and influences the SCDA Executive team to articulate the business’ strategic ambitions and map them onto strategic technology priorities, developing a 2-5 year business plan to deliver this.

  • Defines and presents the future state business and IT architecture in line with and influencing business strategy and plans.
  • Ensures business plans and change outcomes are optimized to align to strategic business, architecture and commercial outcomes.
  • Advises and contributes to delivering the change portfolio within time, quality and budgetary targets.
  • Drives commercial and business value by forming real technology partnerships with the Executive team and from architecture involvement in change.
  • Manages the performance and development of his direct reports and enhances their overall capabilities within their function, with a view of creating a high-performing team.
  • Provides direction and advice to business partners, making key contributions to identifying relevant new opportunities and solving business problems in areas of complexity, strategy, and decision making.
  • The role involves regular Executive and other stakeholder management to engage key influencers in the vision and strategy, clearly demonstrating the value added by the service - particularly President, SVP Finance & Strategy, SVP People, Business Change & Communication, SVP CE and SVP Customer Solutions & Marketing.
  • Provides valuable direction and thought leadership to a broader community of architects, practice managers and commercial specialists with a range of experience and skills, to ensure success in delivery.
  • Manages, monitors and improves Canada’s technology strategy & business planning processes to deliver the required business plan, financials, on time and to quality.
  • Responsible for challenging, agreeing and developing a strategic technology roadmap of change for Canada Business which is affordable, commercially orientated, and aligned to strategic business outcomes.
  • Works closely with Finance & Strategy to verify assumptions and translate strategy into technology and change trends.
  • Works to gather, analyze and present data/information of the external environment and competitor positioning in Canada and elsewhere.
  • Prepares performance reports providing updates on performance against plan with detailed explanation of any divergence from plan that will inform discussions on strategic decisions.
  • Builds strong working relationships to ensure the outputs and services of the team meet portfolio needs and that delivery output meets strategic needs.
  • Produces the 2 to 5 year business plan and delivers against it.
  • Develops a business and architecture roadmap that articulates how the customer’s long term targets and outcomes will be achieved.
  • Delivers overall governance of architectural principles and direction within the change process.


  • Bachelor degree combined with 15 years of relevant experience.
  • Solid understanding of the wider Standard Life Group to identify and understand any impacts on Canada IT and opportunities to leverage knowledge, experience and opportunities more widely.
  • Proven experience in senior positions and a proven track record of delivering change and strategic analysis/ implementation.
  • Experience with an international organization as a Delivery Leader, Business Architect or Senior Enterprise Architect (Standard Life an asset).
  • Significant experience in the financial services industry, working at senior management level.
  • Hands on experience in managing strategy, implementation plans, costs and benefits for large programs of work.
  • Experience in highlighting significant threats to implementation of target business, commercial and architecture outcomes.
  • Experience in interpreting market and customer insight and translating them into tangible strategies and proposals for action.
  • Collaborative approach and good political abilities.
